Soo.... I'm guessing by the silence on the blog that everyone else is having as hard time as I am divining great truths and virtues from this book. Don't get me wrong, I'm totally enjoying reading it, but I'm not really sure what I'm supposed to be learning from it, or what makes it a classic. I did cheat and read the questions provided in the back of TJED to see what I could be thinking about, and that did help a little.
So far I've had some interesting thoughts on pride -- at this point I'm not sure how Darcy will ever become likable in my eyes, I find his pride (though they say it is warranted in the book) to be obnoxious and overbearing. I also find many of the characters to be silly (esp. the mother).
I'm just getting in to some of the observations on marriage which are also interesting — though it makes me wonder, did people actually think and act like these people? It makes me glad to live in modern times.
I'll be interested to get everyone's ideas on the book — specially yours Tammy because you're down there in AZ reading them all by yourself! (complete side note: Tammy was your luggage ever found??!?!)
I also hear rumor that Laura will most definetely NOT be joining us for our book club this Saturday. She has lucked her way out of this novel by having a baby. Last I heard she has an inducement date on the 9th, so I think we'll let her off hte hook to have a baby. Hopefully she won't have to wait even that long and will have the baby on her own this week :D

I was about to post the same thing today! I love the book. It's witty, I love the complex theme of so many characters ordeals to read about etc. It is a hard exercise though; finding the real "classic truths" in this one.
I too think the mom is silly and Darcy is a jerk. I think that all of the characters have pettiness and pride. They analyze people and things with a critical eye and talk about every one and everything.
OK...I will save the rest for our discussion :)
Ok so I'm Amo's friend Ang and yeah I've read part of the book and seen a few versions of the movie. And the movie, well the old one at least, is JUST like the book at least at the beginning. So....with that said, how many of us know SILLY people? Like ridiculous and insanely annoying unrealistic people...I do at least. And oh yeah baby I know some seemingly prideful people such as Darcy and once I got to know them I found them to be truely the most loyal and wonderful people in the world. I have a Darcy in my life and wouldn't trade her for the world. And yes, I have a silly mother, well not my own but I know a few and totally have a few wonderful Elizabeths...Anyway that is my two cents worth from Idaho!
I think the fact that this one isn't quite as obviously applicable or "classic" is what makes this a good one for us to read. I loved TJEd and it was easy to see why that one was important and meaningful. Pride and Prejudice, however, has characters that really do reflect reality, I think. By the end of the book, you fall in love with Darcy, because he is human and real. And Elizabeth has her faults, too. The question becomes, who is prideful and who is prejudiced?
